About the Black Bookstore Coalition

The Black Bookstore Coalition was born during the height of the 2020 pandemic. Founders Ramunda Young of MahoganyBooks and Kalima DeSuze of Cafe Con Libros came together out of a need to create a space to support our unique challenges as Black Bookstore owners. We are a collective of 40+ bookstores from across the Nation - and growing, whose intention is to elevate our businesses through community, cooperative economics, and education.  Four years later, although Kalima has gone on to pursue her business with fervor, Ramunda is still organizing this dynamic group of bookstore leaders along with a newly formed steering committee who are engaged, excited, and vocal about the importance of Black books and our communities.

Current Steering Committee Members Include:
Eric Brooks - Black Pearl Books (Austin, TX)
Onikah Asmoa Caesar (Fulton Street Books - Tulsa, OK)
Demetrius Frazier - Resist Booksellers (Petersburg, VA)
Dara Landry - Class Bookstores (Houston, TX)
Jazzi McGilbert - Reparations.Club (Los Angeles, CA)
Cori Smith - Blk+Brwn Books (Kansas City, MO)
Ashley Valentine - Rooted MKE (Milwaukee, WI)
Vera Warren-Williams - Community Bookstore (New Orleans, LA)
Ramunda Lark Young - MahoganyBooks (Washington, DC/MD/VA)
